I started general contracting here in Sandpoint in 1974. We built everything with 2x4 walls, R 11 insulation, R 19 in the ceilings and none in the floor. This was a big upgrade from earlier construction with no insulation, anywhere. Some houses I remodeled had sawdust in the walls.
Around 1978 we started using 2x6 studs, R 19, with R 38 in the ceiling and R 19 in the floors.
There's probably a limit as to how much insulation is too much, but stopping air leaks and drafts is a huge benefit.
