I have jump started my 6 volt 1947 1/2 ton Ford with a stand alone charged 12 volt battery. The 47 had a 6 volt starter solenoid on the passenger side of the firewall. I added several washers and a nut onto the load side stud of the solenoid. Enough washers to position the nut just beyond the end of the stud. The intent being to preserve the threads of the stud.
Remove the oil bath air breather, pull the choke cable knob out about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way, pull the throttle cable out a bit, connect one jumper cable from 12 v + to the 6 v + or the motor block, turn the ignition key on, install a pair of light leather gloves, connect the other jumper cable to the 12 v -post, spray some gas into the carburetor, cover the carb with one hand, and then jam the 12 v - jumper cable end against that nut on the load side stud of the solenoid. When the motor starts remove the jumper cable from the stud, with your other hand still over the carb allow enough air to enter until the motor levels out, then push the choke and throttle cables in accordingly. If the motor don't start go to plan B.
This method of course puts 12 volt power to the starter motor only as the solenoid main contacts remain open, therefore preventing the 12 v from entering the 6 v wiring system of the vehicle.
This particular starter solenoid had a spring loaded plunger hanging out the bottom of it,I don't know how common that was, but it does give you the option of starting the motor from under the hood. JJB.
