I just had my ’71 W200 fuel tank repaired and am going to install it back behind the bench seat until I can find time for a proper fuel tank relocation project.

Other than the repaired crack, the tank is in very good condition (see pic below) so I doubt it is original. I am replacing all the rubber hoses and seals to minimize cab fuel vapors but I realized that this tank didn’t have any vents.

Upon closer inspection, that gas cap doesn’t fit very tightly so I suspect that the tank is venting through the loose cap. I researched the archives looking for W200 fuel ventilation posts then my service manual last night but I couldn’t find any references to fuel tank ventilation there either. When I say ventilation, I am referring to both the release of pressure as the temperature changes in the fuel tank as well as the inlet of air as fuel is drawn out of the tank to prevent a vacuum condition.

Does anyone know how the original 1971 W200 vehicles vented the fuel tanks?

Thanks,
Mark
