We have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 Hemi and auto transmission. About 130 thousand miles and loads of power. Today with Martie driving, we went around a tight off-camber corner heading up a hill and there were two dull clunk sounds from underneath. I thought it was probably loose steering or suspension components being unusually stressed under the hard off-camber cornering.

On the way home, we discovered that the transmission is stuck in 4th gear (it is a 5 speed). We can select park, neutral, reverse, and drive, but once in "drive" the readout reverts to "4" and will not shift up or down. We can also not shift it manually the way it is designed to be done while off road. It is stuck in 4th.

I have read several forums on-line where they talk about the problem, but the problem seems to mostly effect Dodge trucks. I have pretty much determined that it is not a "limp mode". It is of no help to look at the idiot lights because the "check engine" light is always on due to having to have the catalytic converters professionally replaced with through pipes a couple of years ago.

So it seems this is a relatively common problem, but I have found no definite answers as to how to fix it.

Anyone have any suggestions as to where to look on-line so I can be somewhat knowledgeable about it before taking it to a shop?

Power-Wagon content. If we cannot get this fixed in a few days, Martie may be driving a Power-Wagon to work.
