A deceased friend of mine was a prisoner of war in Japan for 3 and a half years. The guards told the prisoners repeatedly, he said, that they would all be killed as soon as the Allied forces stepped foot on the main islands. It was a psychological torture.
The shock of the A bombs brought a willingness to surrender that would not have happened otherwise.
He and his comrades credit Truman for saving their lives by dropping the bombs.
