If your new joints match up with the ones you just removed...this is what I would try.
When you're pressing them in, tension can build up as you're pressing. Try tapping the flange with a hammer...don't really "whack" it, just tap. That'll usually release the built-up tension allowing it to seat properly. Until you determine it really does not fit, if you grind material off, it will result in play and vibration in the joint. It's up to you if you want to try it.
