My '52 had two of each kind of wheel on it when I got it from the limestone quarry where it was their powder truck. How those 1/2-ton wheel fit over the brake drums is a mystery. Maybe the interference explains why the 1/2-ton wheels had bad cracks in the mounting face at each lug hole. You are right. The difference was rather dramatic once I figured out what was going on and got them off the truck and next to each other.
