Yup, that’s how I do it. A timing light means absolutely nothing unless it’s an engine you’ve already timed properly. It completely depends on your fuel. If you live in Canada where we have 94 octane fuel, you set your timing for that & then you run 89 octane fuel, you’ll be pinging like crazy & damage your motor. If you set it up for 89 octane & then run 94 octane fuel...well there’s no benefit. Timing for me...I turn the distributor until the highest idle, retard it slightly & then go take it for a run up a big hill with the distributor snug but able to adjust on the road. Only run the fuel you plan to regularly buy...and be realistic...most guys run the cheap crap :)
