I used welding cable on my long battery cables in my WC53. Works just fine.
I would recommend shrink tubing on the ends of your cables. It gives a much better seal. I always do two layers of shrink tubing to take care of any possible wear regardless of the wire size. The best thing for long term electrical continuity is solder as it stops corrosion in the fittings. My connectors are never crimped only soldered.
The worst thing to do would be to use just crimped fittings. They create a point of resistance and therefore heat build up. I learned this redoing the wiring in a Willys. Every crimp butt connector had burned insulation next to each connector which exposed bare wire. This occurred on every higher amp circuits (lights, heater, main power feed from the regulator. The wire was of sufficient gauge and only showed heat damage at the connectors.
