I use galvanized angle brackets bolted to the stringers and to to bottom of the treads. There are no cuts to the stringers for the stairs. The stringers are bolted and nailed to the front face of the upper porch. The stringers just rest on the lower landing which is a deck. I had to replace them as the bottom two steps, which get rained on, had rot in one end. This time I will seal the steps to the stringers.
