This was done on purpose to change WC 1/2-ton 4x4 trucks (models T202, T207, T211 and T215) to 4x2s when reassigned from tactical to administrative use to conserve unnecessary moving parts.

War Department Modification Work Order (MWO) ORD G505-W1 dated 31 March 1944 outlines the procedure to remove the transfer case, both drive shafts, both front axle shafts and the front axle differential carrier and pinon from the truck. This was done in depots when the truck was overhauled or in for major repairs.

A round plate was fabricated from 3/16" steel to go on the front of the front axle and a new cap covered the pinon hole. A new longer drive shaft was made from the removed intermediate propeller shaft (that went from the transmission to the transfer case) to replace the old shorter rear drive shaft.

If modified correctly, the WC-6 you found should not have a transfer case. The lever for 4 wheel drive should be strapped tight in the "Out" position. Look for all these modifications the next time you visit this truck. Enjoy!
