I use Ultra-Gray Silicone Gasket maker:
- Machine surface has to be clean of oil,
- Spread a thin layer using finger on machine surfaces and use paper gasket between surfaces,
- Apply to bolt threads to seal threads,
- Tighten bolts, let set 30 minutes, then re-tighten bolts.
Product works fine, seals well. Regarding axle hub gaskets, two things:
- The metal around the studs pulls up over time so you end up with a stud hole raised condition. Pull the studs and check sliding a metal file across machine surface. If studs have pulled, you'll see shinny metal around stud hole - see link for image. You need to correct using a 7/16 drill to lightly chamfer the stud hole to releave thread stress to create a good seal.
- Clean off oil/grease and follow above.
The only problem I've had using the product above is separating the parts and scraping the gasket off, it does stick. It's not a product that I would use on valve cover gaskets, but I have used it on the oil pan gasket with no issues.
