That method works great, I use it all the time especially on the pinion seals. 2 or three tiny tacks & the heat shrinks the seal so it literally falls out. Just make sure your ground cable is right beside your seal you’re welding on so you don’t have the current running through gears etc. It’s really critical when you’re welding on boats.
I saw a guy welding once on a rear end & his ground cable was attached to one of his studs!! Not good.
