Should shape at barely glowing. Then quench with grease, imho. Gunsmithing thread below on a similar topic said don’t overheat and water or oil-quench.
My difficulty with thin material is the transition point to the unheated section (after quenching) - that’s where it breaks.
My old boss made some of our pry bars and tools for pulling manhole covers. Sometimes he got the quench right and springy, other times it would be brittle and the ends broke. It was always presumed to be the steel’s fault. :)
