Ed, my '47 was converted to 12 volt (generator) before I bought it 22 years ago. After about 6 or 7 years, I converted it back to 6 volt. Through all of this it has had the original amp guage and it has always worked well. Just reverse the wires when changing from positive ground to negative ground. I do not think a 12 volt alternator would pose any problems.
