Most all aluminum grilles are clear anodized. This is to ward off oxidation and corrosion. It's a hard coating that is rough to cut through. I say cut through, as when you get aggressive with the buffing wheel, you'll cut through the .001" or less anodizing to polish the bare aluminum. After that the grille will oxidize on the vehicle faster than you can sneeze. Clear coating with paint or urethane will last a few months until it starts peeling. Especially in cold climates. To retain the finish you should look into having the part re anodized. This is fairly cheap, but the surface condition of the part has to be dead even over the whole surface. If not, the apperance will be blotchy. Are you sure some outfit in Taiwan dosen't make a new grille?
