I had good luck on my '74 Ramcharger using aluminum polish and a BUNCH of elbow grease. I had to use steel wool in a few spots (over spray, heavy oxidation). It took a few days (and a few beers) but it turned out pretty good. If you have a Dremel tool I think you could make short work of it in less than a day.
