This sounds similar to an experience I had with a '74 Ramcharger many years ago. I was playing in the snow and revving it hard and it suddenly started missing and backfiring. It got me home, but barely. The timing chain had jumped a cog when it was rapped up real tight. I replaced it with a double row - roller type chain and sprockets after that.
