I've got 3 original W300's (58, 64, 67)with single rear wheels, and a bunch of dual hubs as well. The dual hub has a heavy cast flange that mounts both the wheel and the brake drum(one inside, one outside) with the wheel mounting plane about 4" in from the outer surface where the axel shaft mounts. The single hub has a thin 1/4" flange welded on at about the mid point to carry the brake drum, and the heavy cast flange for the wheel is almost flush with the outer surface where the axel shaft mounts. I agree, I think the IH hubs taper in more near the lug studs. Rob
