You're right about Oiling and Greasing

Head bolts or others requiring precise torqueing should never be oiled or greased. According to the ASME chart I have the amount of friction reduction can approach 80% meaning that you can seriously stretch a bolt past its rated capacity.

However the type of thread sealant and somewhat incorrectly refered to as "thead lube" that is included with some head gasket kits should be properly engineered to provide no or little friction reduction and act as just that - a thread corrosion resistant sealant.

I have never measured the depth of the bolt well on my 48 (maybe I will during the rebuild) but perhaps it is possible that a combination of having the head milled and bolt stretch might result in a situation where the bolt is bottoming out and the clamping forces are not what they should be.
This actually happened on a LS-1 engine that I put into my Jag. I made a mistake and reused the headbolts which are of a modern "use once, throw away" variety.

Yea, it's a bit of a WAG.
