Clint:

The Model # 36 heater can be used with a radiator overflow (surge) tank if the extensions from the WW II gasoline tank for the Superflex engine block heater are used. The same tank as the surge tank (which to my best knowledge was first used on WW II WC-63/62 6X6 trucks) was used to hold gasoline for the engine coolant heater. When used as a gasoline tank, it was painted red instead of OD or black.
These extensions move the surge tank about 3 inches outward (forward) from the firewall and raise it up about another 2 to 3 inches. The end result is that 90 degree elbows can be attached to the model 36 heater hoses just out from the firewall, turning the hoses downward at 90 degrees so they do not run into the surge tank. I don't recall ever seeing these extensions in any PW parts list, but they are a practical solution to having both the model 36 heater and a surge tank installed in a 1946-47 WDX.
