K here’s an example. I called the Kubota dealer today because I have a tractor that needs to be serviced & frankly...I just don’t have the time. I called to ask what they’d charge for oil change & sharpen my mower blades...$550 was their estimate!!! What??? Yup...3hrs they figure & it’s $140/hr plus material. What you think the mechanic gets out of that...$100?
I think what it comes down to is if you can find a mom & pop shop that owns their building & all of their machinery...you can probably get a great price. Problem is those guys are all retiring, dying & getting bought out & the new guys aren’t working for $50/hr.
Like in Vancouver, you’re not going to open a business if you can’t make at least $200k a year. Then you add exorbitant rents & leases & nobody’s doing this stuff for $60 or $70/hr in the big cities. Maybe in middle North America but the small guys just gotten run outta here.
There’s just no machine shop within 100 miles of me that’s working under $100/hr. You guys know how it works...to do that job properly it’s not just as simple as boring a hole & pressing it in. I mean the block gets cleaned several times & these new shops just stick it to you.
Trust me...if you have good local long time businesses operating near you...frequent them & support them. Once the big Costco/Home Depots come to town...the gig is up.
There are so many shops that have closed here in the past 20 years because the Summit Racing’s & Napa’s have come to town...it’s sad.
Ahhh...the good ol days.
