Do the complete rebuild. You could have a warped head that's leaking compression between cylinders and with no history on the engine, that's what I would do. I am working with a Vet. that bought an M37 which had a dead cylinder number 4, we pulled the engine, sent it to a machinist and when the machine pulled it apart, found part of the head gasket missing between 3 & 4 and other areas of the head gasket where it was separating. Engine must have gotten hot at some point. Don't waste your time, pull it and have a dependable engine!
