Yep, the Wikipedia article referenced by Todd ("Spence," lol) even says the gage system is non-linear. So maybe a rule of thumb of gage being equal to the number of sheets to make and inch (as mentioned in one of the other posts) might give someone a rough idea of sheet thickness, but apparently it's not very accurate.

Boy, no wonder most (or maybe all) other countries in the world don't use this system. I'm used to the English system units, but there are some areas, such as sheet metal gages, where I wouldn't mind going metric.
