I have a 46 PW with stock engine, trans, and 5.83 rear and 37" tires. I have drums on all 4 wheels. I live on a tar and chip road and can skid all 4 tires with the drum brakes.
Keith perhaps you have the 56 or newer synchro trans? I have found I cannot downshift from 4th to 3rd unless I first slow to 20 Mph. 3rd to 2nd won't happen till 8-10 mph.
I don't know what the actual gear ratios are but to me it seems like 4th is twice as fast as 3rd gear.
Here in hilly central pa I always drop into 3rd before starting down any hill. I don't trust the drum brakes because of overheating on a long downhill run.
