Well I might not be politically correct but,
After 50+ years of handling cable, winch's and blocks, I always wear loose leather gloves, and hand over hand cable control.
Back in the day when breaking down and moving
250+ton cranes you handle a lot of cables from 5/8" to 1 1/4".
I've had numerous sliced hands and fingers from burr's, and They hurt.
Much worse without glove.
Always keep your distance from a winding winch.
No need to be up close and personal.
