Yes, thicker oil will make things run hotter. Guys who run synthetic oil say the transfer case and differentials run cooler. How much I don't know. I use regular 85w/140 dino oil in my rigs. Components get hot, but I've never had anything blow up because of it. Just from a lack of oil :(
