When I was in the auto industry about 20 odd years ago, I put it to visiting Toyota engineers who were discussing the new (back then) imminent release of an electric version of their popular car, that they should also look into a 4WD version for the LandCruiser with a motor for each wheel. They said they were already looking at the possibility, but not an off-road version at that time. I think inboard mounted with independant suspension would be the wy to go to keep the unsprung weight down.
