Great explanations on the reason for using an external resistor! Now another question: What's a good way to protect the external resistor from breaking when it gets splashed by water? I've heard that they get so hot that the ceramic will sometimes break if they get splashed. Mine has the external resistor tie wrapped to the coil, and it's never been a problem, but I'm sure yhat area could get splashed pretty easily.
