12V ignition systems using contact points use a resister. If you have an external resister, then you use a coil with no internal resister. The resister reduces volts to 9V for longer point life, however, coils with internal resistors don't provide full 12V in the coil when starting the engine. See PIF, alternator conversions, for wiring diagram and part images. I suggest you use an an external resistor.
