I have converted using 12 volt gen in the past. I prefer the design over alternator when it comes to an offroad work vehicle. you cant compression start an alternator vehicle without a battery. if battery goes bad or gets stolen gen vehicles dont need a battery to make the vehicle function. They also seem more durable to shorts and if you battery cable becomes disconnect while running it will not hurt it like an alt would be. gen doesn't care about needing a load like an alt
