Wheel painting

Hi all. Having never stripped down a wheel completely for painting before, I was wondering if it is safe to paint the "bead" and "channel where the split ring nests onto the wheel.
I am worried that the paint would act like a "grease", resulting in a rather disastrous outcome, so I thought I would ask the pro's here on this site.
