Thanks Dave. I probably should gave spelled out more clearly in the first post that my main intent is to keep the wood from absorbing water and cupping and splitting. With it being so dry out here in Colorado, wood will move quite a bit if it gets wet on one side. If it goes gray over time that's perfectly fine with me. But cupping and checking is no good.
