You could have rust chunks in the channel that needs to be cleaned out. If it's a continuous gasket, it could be too small in diameter. You can glue it in but replacing it in the future could be a real pain if pieces stick well and break off in the channel, you might not be able to clean it enough for the next gasket to seat. The gasket I use was a long piece that had to be glued together and didn't require any glue.
