A tip I picked up years ago from a circle track racer was to use weather strip adhesive (the 3M stuff, yellow or black), especially on oil pan and valve cover gaskets, and it never failed me. It works great when you apply it to 1 surface, and the part can be easily removed, but the gasket is held securely while tightening the part. CAT also makes an excellent gasket sealer, its reddish-orange color, but I can't remember the name of it.
