The bolt patterns are different between the helical cut gear civilian transmissions and the straight cut gear transmissions.

There is an exception to this, the US M37 transmission is a helical cut gear transmission that will bolt up to the bell housing from a straight cut gear transmission. I believe that the military did this so that they could throw any Dodge transmission into an M37 Or WC. That made it much simpler for the motor depots as could reduce their stock and not have to worry if it would fit or not.

I actually have an M37 transmission in my PW that originally had a straight cut gear tranny. It was a simple bolt up and I was good to go.
