In some ways it is very simple and in other ways it is not so simple. The original bed board bolts and cross members bolts that went through the bed boards were fine thread carriage bolts (with much flatter heads than are now available). All of the carriage bolts that went through the metal strips and the boards were different with flatter heads than now available. These "carriage bolts" were called "step bolts". IF you can find them USE STEP BOLTS. They are fine thread bolts WITH FLATTER HEADS as opposed to the standard course thread bolts we know as carriage bolts. It is up to you. do you want the "original look" or will close look be OK?

If I can be assistance or help to you, please let me know and I can furnish further dimensions, details on lengths, etc.
