It sounds like you want to re-power it (4BT diesel, or poly 318 gas is preferred or go all the way with a Red Ram Hemi) and go with a "new era drive line (trany, third members/axles, and disk breaks)
Dan Mininger, of Girard, PA and Matt Tisdale of Winslow IA, both do some nice work, Matt even modifies the modern axles to allow for the traditional five lug PW wheels for the classic look.
It will be more user friendly if you have plans of it being a daily driver in a fast passed town.
