Our Dept of Transportation says to keep a MINIMUM of 2 seconds between yourself and the vehicle ahead. Double the time for rain and triple it for snow or ice (6 Seconds). I try to always safely pass large trucks. You can't see what is ahead and things tend to blow off and hit the following vehicle. Have seen huge ice chunks fly off the top of a trailer and smash a following vehicle. Tire shrapnel etc.
