While Keith and others make an excellent point of "behind the plug" environmental costs, natural gas fired electrical plant (majority of electrical production) electric charging is still way cleaner than the internal combustion engine and the performance of a good battery/electric motor combo is difficult to beat. Just as modern jet aircraft surpasses the DC-3 in about every way, I’m afraid that, as battery technology improves (cost and energy density wise) internal combustion will be less and less common in our daily drivers.
That said, there are still jobs (short and un-improved runways) that the DC-3 does better than most (maybe any) modern aircraft, not to mention the historical significance of the C-47. I think the Power Wagon holds a similar place in the automotive world today and will continue to do so as we move to electric propulsion.
