The motor and drive units are the most important items. You are on the right track. Many ZTR's are almost the same now, except for the deck design, body parts, and color. Heck, if they were not different colors, you could often not tell them apart from a distance. Hustler , which I forgot to mention, makes some good machines also.
Really search for a used machine in good condition if possible, and, stick with one that has a good reputation for local service and parts. Good luck in you selection of machines. I know it can be rather difficult to pick out just the right one. Oh, get a demo if at all possible, even on a used one.
