Andrew, I believe your engine has the external bypass setup. I think your photo shows the hump on the front of the head, which corresponds to a bypass passage in the block, rather than the arrangement that was used in the earlier engines (before approximately 1952 or so, I think?). What exactly that means as far as the rubber ring gasket and the hole in the thermostat, I'm uncertain, but I thought this might be a useful piece of info, if you weren't already aware.
