The way I understand it is that detergent oil holds the impurities in suspension where they can be filtered and/or drained at oil change intervals. Whereas non-detergent oil lets impurities fall to the bottom of the oil pan where they turn into sludge.

If one has an old engine that one suspects was run only with non-detergent oil, it would probably be a good idea to drop the oil pan and clean it before using detergent oil. I did not do this way back when, but I did drain the oil, run 5 quarts of kerosene for a few minutes, and then drain that before adding fresh oil.
