You adjust the MC piston rod until you have 7/16 of pedal travel measuring at the top of the pedal. This should be the last adjustment after you adjust the shoes. Brake shoe heal clearance is .006 and is adjusted via the anchor bolts at the bottom of the brake plate. After adjusting the heal, toe clearance s/b .012, brakes shoes are adjusted. After adjusting the piston rod, if pedal travel is beyond the 7/16 travel, you can reduce the heal clearance but make sure the brakes don't drag.

If brake drums have not been turned, you may experience a high area from warpage, back off the brake shoe adjusting pins at the top of the brake plate until no drag of shoes.

Anytime you have to back off the brake shoes to avoid drag, you will experience increased pedal travel, adjustment of the piston rod can be made to compensate.
