That’s because Verizon still considers the phone theirs as far as network. The phone may not have been totally unlocked or switched over to Cricket. All the phone companies make sure that their phones only work on their network. There were ways to unlock the phone so it would work on other networks, but at one time that was illegal. Now you can take often take your phone with you to another network with the same communication protocol. However, there can be issues if it is not unlocked correctly. The fact that you can’t update your phone indicates their may be issues. I looked at a couple of forums after googling “no updates on Android phone after switching from Verizon to Cricket”. It came up with a lot of information. It appears that the updates are pushed via the original carrier that the phone was branded with. Several said you need to put a Verizon SIM card in and it will update. You can get a SIM card online for a few bucks then register it but don’t put any money on it. Stick it in your phone and it will update. After about a month the SIM card will unregister as you did not put any money on it or get a phone number for it. You will have register the SIM card every time you want to update
