Ok here is what I understand. The trucks are built by Dodge obviously and the build card reflects that and the vin number. Dodge had nothing to do with the hood numbers. Once built the trucks were parked in a large parking lot for delivery to the armed forces. They were inspected and accepted at some point. Then possibly while in the parking lot they were assigned a hood number. As best I can figure out they had people who worked through the parked trucks painting hood numbers sequentially on the trucks (there are pictures of this happening). The trucks appear to have been parked row by row as they came out of the factory. However, the painters did not sequentially paint the numbers in the same order that they were parked in. So the vin and hood numbers are not sequential with each other.

I have talked to the guy who owns the carryall that has the hood number one higher than mine. The vin numbers of the truck, if I remember correctly, are 30 or 40 different.

Don’t assume that the vin and hood number are in sequence with each other. The truck with the vin number one greater that mine was either parked next to mine or processed by the Army right after mine.
