I've been at my day job now for 25 years. It's a machine tooling shop and we do tight tolerance stuff for stamping and forming. over the years the amount of people who can do the job has flipped. When I hired in in 1994 it was about 8 of of 10 could do and pick it up. Now it's about 2 out of 10. Most feel they should get paid for just showing up (sometimes) as it takes up THEIR free time and should be compensated for it.
We've always had drug tests for applicants but when they went to the hair test, which is more accurate it changed fast. They didn't tell anyone when they switched to it and a person from HR told me that out of the first 100 they did, only 8 (EIGHT) passed. Think about that the next time you are driving and assume that person with their blinker on is really turning.
The 2 major things that I see have happened are this. People/still children come in and want you to set everything up and tell them what to do. If anything goes wrong it's not their fault or they weren't told how or not to do something. Basically not responsible for anything or the Mom says I'm perfect thing so it can't be me. They fail to see that the reason they are being paid is to be able to do the work totally themselves. They instantly want all the perks of a 100% operator because they are at the same job. Parents doing/providing everything for kids promotes this mindset.
The other thing is not being able to tell someone they are lazy or plain suck at their job. The whole "I'm offended by that" has gotten so out of control in the company setting it would astound most. To get fired you have to do something pretty crazy or admit it to them. Lie and get by has become the norm as if they(management) don't witness it, they can't prove it.
We have people that scrap more product money wise than they produce per hour and it takes months to get rid of them. Basically paying someone to cost you money. It's crazy out there.
