I was having a similar issue where the Truck was not charging.
We tried the abrasive like you on the points, nada.
Took the gen and voltage regulator into a shop. The man said the gen checked out OK, but the problem was the VR. He said that the metal in the VR's points is very hard, and one needs to use a points file
To get the subtle corrosion off.
