My '47 was a low optioned truck without vent windows. Sometime in the early 1980's I took the vent windows out of my parts truck and installed them in my '47. I never really gave it much thought for the next 25 years or so. Then, thanks to the efforts of Powerwagonjohn, I was able to replace the driver's door with a nice original that did not have the large ugly dent that mine had from a previous owner. It was tough to find a nice driver's door with original paint the same color as my truck, but John came through for me.

When I went to swap out the doors, I noticed that the replacement was a vent window door. What immediately stood out was that the wear spots on the window sills did not match between the doors. This is where the paint was worn off to bare metal from years of an arm out the door. My old door (originally non-vented) had the wear spot further forward. The replacement door (originally vented) had the wear spot a few more inches to the rear of the window opening.

Then it hit me; my original door was driven by a previous owner who was taking advantage of the large window opening and was not just hanging his elbow out the window, he was extending his whole arm and was probably grasping the side mirror arm for comfort. The replacement door had a wear spot where a previous owner was simply hanging his elbow out the window.

It took me almost 30 years to realize that I had replaced my non-vented window with a vented window and had been driving around with the mismatched wear spots in the paint for all of those years....

When I told John, he commented that he had noticed this mistake years before but had not pointed it out to me for fear that doing so may be upsetting to me. I thought that was very polite of him. He is a real gentleman. But...I still had egg on my face from that obvious detail that I had overlooked for so long.
