Good points. I agree that it's difficult for later work to be as good as factory original work.

I don't think a rule of thumb is better than the factory specs, but I just wouldn't expect them to be that far off.

I also wonder about allowable taper and out-of-roundness. Reason I ask is because I measured the journals on my 265 crank a few days ago, and I found that some journals were as much as 0.0005 - 0.0006" out of round, and 0.0003 - 0.0004" of taper. This is a freshly machined crank. It seems to be excessive, especially when the clearances might only be 0.0005" on the low end, per factory specs.
